Although I encourage people to get heavy, stable treadmills with adequate size motors. The problem is these models take up considerable space, and are often not very mobile. Several manufacturers are coming out with more compact models that target people who have limited space, for example apartment dwellers.
Smooth Fitness offers the Smoot EVO SX4 treadmill. A machine designed for people who are space challenged.
When I was out to the Smooth headquarters, they showed me this model. My initial reaction was reserved, but after I began to think about the EVO SX4 and the benefits it offers to a certain targeted audience, I warmed-up to the idea.
The Smooth EVO SX4 Treadmill Pros and Cons.
Extremely Compact - When folded it has a depth of 11". You can put it against the wall and it hardly takes any space. Furthermore, depending on the height of your bed, in most cases it will fit underneath.
Easy to Move - If you have limited space and want a treadmill you can store, it needs to be easily mobile. At 150 lbs., when folded the Smooth EVO SX4 is fairly easy to move from one location to another. It is not as lightweight as the Horizon Evolve SG Compact, that weighs 99 lbs., however, that extra 51 lbs. really makes a difference in the stability of the machine.
Comes Assembled - I've put together several treadmills, and it takes time and can be frustrating. The Smooth EVO SX4 comes already assembled. You raise the console and plug-in and you are ready to burn calories.
2" Rollers - Rollers are important in extending the life of the treadmill. These are not the biggest rollers on the market, but considering how compact and inexpensive this treadmill is, they are larger than I would expect on a compact model.
Cushion Deck - Often compact treadmills have limited shock absorption. The EVO SX4 has probably the best shock absorption of any compact model. Just look at the thickness of the deck and compare it to others.
Exercise Programs - You get seven preprogrammed workouts, in addition to manual control. In comparison to the Horizon Evolve that has one program. Exercise programs are an excellent motivator. They mix up your level of exercising, which can be more effective in burning calories.
16" X 50" treadbelt - This treadbelt has a very limited surface. The price you pay for a compact design. Measure 16" and you will see it is not very wide. This treadbelt really limits you to walking. Also, the length of the belt limits the user height to somewhere around 5"10'.
2.0 Continuous Duty HP Motor - A smaller than average motor, that is once again best suited for walking.
Manual Incline - I was turned off to the fact you had to manually move the incline of the treadmill. This means you cannot change the incline while you are exercising. Once again, a comprise to the compact design.
Decent Warranty - This is the best warranty you will find on a compact treadmill. Ten-year motor coverage, and 3-years parts and 1-year labor.
Our Review - Smooth EVO SX4 Treadmill
As a compact treadmill the Smooth EVO SX4 is probably the best design available. It weighs more than most, is more stable and has more cushioning. If you have limited space this is an ideal choice. However, if space is not an issue you want to consider a treadmill with a larger surface and big motor. Also, having a power incline that can be adjusted as you exercise is a real benefit. A consideration is the Smooth
5.65 treadmill (See the Smooth 5.65 Video).
The Smooth EVO SX4 treadmill is not designed for tall and extremely overweight individuals, and should not be considered for multiple users. (Although it should handle two occasional users.)
