The ProForm Crosswalk Caliber Elite Treadmill has some decent features, and the price is attractive. However, there is one major drawback that suggests you may want to consider one of their other models - 17" x 53" Treadbelt.
I'm a bit surprised that ProForm is even making any treadmills with less than a 20" wide belt. The standard is generally 20", with some brands offering 22" wide belts. Take a tape measure and see just how wide 17" is. You'll be walking on a very tight surface.
Another feature I'm not crazy about are the moveable exercise handlebars. This apparently is suppose to offer the same value as the upper body workout of an elliptical trainer. However, the engineering and design is totally different. First, the handle bars are located towards the front of the treadmill. It would seem hard to use them if you are comfortably centered on the treadbelt.
Second, you increase the resistance of the handle bars by tightening or loosening them. It just doesn't have that same feel you get with an elliptical. If you are thinking about buying this treadmill for the upper body workout option - don't. Go buy an elliptical trainer instead.
There are two features that make the ProForm Crosswalk Caliber Elite attractive, particularly when this treadmill is seriously discounted.
2.75 Continuous Duty HP Motor - This motor is adequate for both walkers and joggers, although I would generally recommend this treadmill for walking. In fact, I would say this motor is an overkill for this treadmill.
iFit Technology - An exclusive feature only offered on ProForm and NordicTrack Treadmills. For an extra cost you can purchase workout training programs that follow a progressive 8-week period. The training controls the speed and incline of your treadmill. It also includes audio coaching. Some of the programs promote both a cardio and strength workouts, by having you do exercises off the machine. Each program is designed by a certified personal trainer. iFit has become a big hit and a huge seller for ProForm.
Our Review - ProForm Crosswalk Caliber Elite Treadmill
Here is my take, when selling at $499 the Crosswalk Caliber Elite is worth considering, but I would look at the other available ProForm models at this price, and see if you can get a treadmill with a 20" wide belt.
Of course, I have to give you my rap about buying a budget treadmill. Budget treadmills are built with budget parts. They have neither the quality or durability of more expensive models. As of 12/5/08 the Crosswalk Caliber Elite was selling for $499, with shipping. Subtract the shipping and there is not much left for the parts and a profit.
If your budget is limited and you can't afford more, then this model or a comparable ProForm is probably one of your better buys. However, at this price there are limitations, and one of them is the weight limit. They put it at 300 lbs. I would place it considerably lower.
The warranty is 12 years motor and 1-year parts and labor. You may want to go with two years or more of coverage and protect your investment. |
