NordicTrack X9i Incline TrainerNordicTrack has been selling the Incline Trainers for several years and they have been extremely popular.  Part of the success has been using Jillian Michaels, of Biggest Loser fame,  as the spokesperson, and when she speaks you better listen. Although the most significant reason for the popularity is that Incline Trainers are very effective in burning calories, losing weight and getting in shape.

For those not familiar with the incline trainer, they are basically a treadmill that inclines to extreme levels up to 40%.  You generally use them for walking, they tend to have short decks that make them impractical for running.  The advantage to this unique treadmill concept is...

  1. You can get an intense cardio workout.  Just like hiking up a steep mountain.
  2. There tends to be less stress to your joints because you are primarily walking.

Holiday Special: The NordicTrack X9i Incline Trainer was selling for $1,999. Go to www.NordicTrack.com for the latest deal.*

However, there were potential customers that wanted to walk at extreme inclines and run with the deck leveled.  With the release of the 2012 models the company now offers the NordicTrack X9i Incline Trainer.  This latest version has all the benefits of the previous models, but in addition you get an extra long 62" treadbelt, which is long enough for a runner's long strides.  So you can either walk at steep inclines, or run at a more level incline.  Of course, if you are a fanatic you can run at steep inclines, but probably not for long.

NordicTrack X9i Incline Trainer  Features...

10" Touch Display with Android Browser —Another upgrade for the NordicTrack X9i Incline Trainer isthe 10" full color touch display with a n Android Browser.  In addition to getting a colorful display of themany features and programs, you also can access the Internetthrough your Wi-Fi.  While you are sweating off the calories you can read your email, listen to online music, watch YouTube videos and catch up on your favorite web sites.

40% Incline and -6% Decline — Being able to incline the deck to 40% allows you to get one of the most intense workouts you will find on any cardio machine.  Most people are not going to last long at 25% or more.  That ability to incline the NordicTrack X9i so steeply means you can burn calories efficiently without the stress and strain that comes with running.  In fact, the company claims you will burn more calories faster in comparison to using a treadmill.

In addition to inclining the machine you can also decline the X9i  to -6%, which allows you to simulate hiking down hills and mountains, and target different lower body muscles.

20" x 62" Treadbelt — As mentioned the longer treadbelt makes the X9i more practical for running.  It allows for the longer strides lengths that come with running.

iFit Live Compatible — With iFit Live you can combine the incline and decline features with Google Maps and experience virtually hiking trails around the world while viewing your progress.  You can either select a predefined route, or map out your own route, and the NordicTrack X9i Incline Trainer   will simulate the ups and downs while providing your with either a satellite, earth or street view.   I've mapped out streets in my neighborhood and as I was walking on the Incline Trainer I was able to see familiar sites, while the Incline Trainer adjusted the incline to the hilly terrain.  How do they do that?

In addition, you can define your fitness goals at iFit.com and get an 8-week personalized training routine designed by Jillian Michaels.  She provides audio coaching as you workout.  A new workout is wirelessly and automatically downloaded every day to the Incline Trainer X9i, and the results are recorded in real time to your iFit.com account, allowing you to track your progress.

Our Review - NordicTrack X9i Incline Trainer

The Incline Trainers have been out for several years and NordicTrack keeps improving on the concept.  The X9i takes the basic idea of walking at extreme inclines and adds...

  • 20" x 62" length Treadbelt, allowing you to also run,
  • -6% Decline, which targets additional muscles and simulates going up and down mountains,
  • Full Color Touch Screen Display with Android Browser, which allows you to experience the full impact of iFit Live, in addition to being able to browse the Internet.

So the question is do you want to spend $2,000 on the premium NordicTrack Incline Trainer, or get a heavy duty treadmill for the same price?  That really depends if you are sold on the concept of extreme incline training.  As mentioned, the benefits are you can get an intense and efficient cardio workout while walking.  Thus, reducing the impact that comes from running.

I'm personally sold on the concept and would seriously consider an Incline Trainer for my next cardio equipment purchase.
