When I use a treadmill, I usually crank up the incline. There are two reasons. First, I enjoy hiking and I find using the incline on a treadmill is very similar to hiking up a mountain - although it is not as panoramic. At a steep incline, I really get my cardio going. In no time I am sweating bullets.
The second reason I like to crank up the incline is because walking at a steep incline gives me a workout equivalent to running at high speeds, but is not as abusive to my joints. I'm in my mid-fifties, and I want to make sure I'm hiking up mountains for another 30 years.
So that is why I find the NordicTrack X5 Incline Trainer so appealing. This hybrid treadmill is all about walking at a steep incline. In fact, you can crank up the incline to 40%. Treadmills usually max out between a 10%-15% incline, and at that level you can get a serious workout. However, increasing the incline to 20%-30% will take you to a new level of exertion. You will build muscles and burn calories at a considerably higher rate.
In fact, you will workout different lower body muscles than you would from walking or jogging on a flat surface.
The NordicTrack X5 Incline Trainer vs. the TreadClimber
Reliability - The BowFlex TreadClimber gets alot of hype from the endless infomercials. The major issue I have with the TreadClimber is the reliability. I've received a number of negative reviews about mechanical problems. Prior to receiving these customer testimonials, I felt there would be potential problems considering all of the moving parts.
The design of the X5 incline is simpler and consequently less "inclined" to break down. It also comes with a lifetime motor warranty.
Versatility - The Incline Trainer is more versatile for a number of reasons.
A steeper range of incline.
- A 52" long treadbelt. With a 52" long treadbelt you have the option of jogging or walking. The TreadClimber only allows you to walk.
- The Incline Trainer offers a larger selection of workout programs, in addition it is equipped with the iFit technology.
Our Review - NordicTrack X5 Incline Trainer
If you are serious about getting in shape and burning calories, the NordicTrack X5 Incline Trainer is worth considering. As mentioned, one of the benefits of the X5 is you will get more results in less time. This machine will burn some serious calories if you are willing to push yourself.
Furthermore, exercising with a steep incline does a better job of building and sculpting your glutes, hamstrings, fore legs, quads and calfs. And isn't that the main reason we go through the hassle of exercising - to look good?
I wouldn't recommend the Incline Trainer for jogging and running. The belt just doesn't have an adequate length.. You are probably better off with a regular treadmill with a longer deck. Finally, you get a 5 year warranty and 90 days on parts and labor. I believe this is an error, and it is probably the same as the NordicTrack X3, which is lifetime motor and 1-year parts and labor. Regardless, I would extend the warranty another year or two.
