When I was at the corporate headquarters the staff was excited about the upcoming release of the Incline Trainer X3, and I have to say I was impressed. I actually like cranking up the incline when I use a treadmill. There are several reasons.
It is less abusive to my joints to walk at an incline, rather than run. You get reduced stress and strain to your knees, ankles, hips and back. It saves your joints.
It gives a superior cardio workout. Walking at a 20% incline can burn up to 3x more calories than walking on a level deck (Goes up to 40%). Incline training is a great weight loss exercise.
Note: As of 11/18/09 the NordicTrack X3 Incline Trainer was selling for $1,599. Go to www.NordicTrack.com to get the latest price.
It tones different parts of my lower body, in comparison to running. I also felt it in my abs, they seem to tighten when walking at a steep incline.
The other reason I like the incline trainer is because I like to hike, and this is about as close as I get to going up a precipitous mountain, unless I make a trek to the Rockies .
So if you want a killer workout, the Incline Trainer X3 is worth considering, and the price is right.
Now you probably have seen the commercials for the BowFlex TreadClimber. It works on a totally different concept, where you have to moveable platforms that move with your stride. A great idea, unfortunately the execution has been a problem. I have heard of about numerous problems with the mechanics. In fact, I talked to one fitness equipment store that stopped selling them because of the problems.
In comparison, the NordicTrack Incline Trainer is basically a treadmill that goes at a extreme incline. In fact, it goes up to 40%, which is killer, and has a simple and proven design.
Features on the NordicTrack Incline Trainer X3.
Compact Design - The length is about 6" less than your typical treadmill with a 54" treadbelt.
Built-in Speakers - The quality is not great, but not bad. You can plug-in your iPod player directly into the console.
iFit Technology - You can purchase a series of 8-week workout programs designed by professional trainers. The programs console the speed and incline of the machine, and include audio coaching. The iFit technology has become very popular, and customers rave about it.
2.8 Continuous Duty HP Motor - Sufficient to handle workouts at steep inclines.
GrafixxT Hi-Altitude Display - I know this is rather gimmicky, but I like this feature. The display shows your workout in 3-D. You watch yourself work your way up a virtual mountainside. You get nine workout programs that control the speed and incline. There is also Randon Trail Generator which takes parts of the 9 built-in workouts and rearranges them into new challenging exercises.
Other Features - You get a built-in fan directed at your core. Does a decent job of cooling you off. The X3 is equipped for wireless heart rate control, but the strap is extra. There is a random trail generator. It takes parts of the 9 workout programs and mixes them up. A nice features for adding variety to your exercising.
Our Review - NordicTrack Incline Trainer X3
If you want to burn calories more efficiently, tone more muscles and reduce the potential for injuries, than the Incline Trainer X3 is an excellent choice. When I tried out the machine I found it to be solid and sturdy. The motor ran quietly and was more than adequate for the challenge.
I would not consider the Incline Trainer if you plan to run or jog. The belt is only 51" long, the length is best designed for incline walking. Also, the warranty could be better. You get a 5-year motor warranty, but only 90-days parts and labor coverage. I contacted NordicTrack and told them they need to crank this up to at least 1-year. Regardless, I recommend you buy an extended warranty. The prices are quite reasonable.
Beyond that, the NordicTrack Incline Trainer X3 is probably the best value out there for this kind of machine. If you want to get into serious shape and take your workout beyond the limitations of a treadmill, the X3 is a good choice.

Comments from Jillian Michaels - TV Personal Trainer
"Incline training is more efficient than other aerobic exercises. At just 25% incline, and 2 mph, you'll burn 3 times the calories compared to walking on a level surface. When you increase the incline to 40% you're burning 5 times the calories , just by walking. That's why I use it with the contestents on TV. Incline training works, and it's fast. And because all you have to do is walk, incline training is virtually zero impact. This means you'll be able to work out longer and see the results faster."
