A Running Machine that Entertains

NordicTrack Elite 9500 PRO Treadmill ReviewThe NordicTrack Elite 9500 PRO treadmill is their top of the line new model for 2010.  Now they suggest it is commercial grade, but that is pushing it.  However, it is designed for runners and multiple users, and is compliments with some impressive features.

One of the problems I have with NordicTrack is that they may suggest that some of their budget treadmills are capable of handling runners or they are commercial grade, and this gets them in trouble.  Users end up buying machines that are not compatible with their fitness goals.

In the case of the NordicTrack 9500 PRO, you have a treadmill that is engineered for runners and heavier individuals.

Note: As of 7/29/10 the NordicTrack Elite 9500 PRO treadmill was selling for $1,699 with shipping. They also extended the warranty to 5-years parts and 2-years labor. Go to NordicTrack Treadmills for the latest price.

NordicTrack Elite 9500 PRO Features...

4.0 Continuous Duty HP Motor — This is an excessively large motor for a residential treadmill.  There is no reason it should not last for the duration of the machine.  It should also run effortlessly when you are running at high speeds or at steep inclines.

20" x 60" Treadbelt — The measurement is by the length of the treadbelt and not the "running surface". That means it may actually be a couple of inches shorter because part of the belt is covered by shroud.  Regardless, you get a running surface adequate for interval training, sprints and long strides.

NordicTrack Elite 9500 Pro console7" Digital Flat Screen TV — The TV on the NordicTrack Elite 9500 PRO is not that big, but it is conveniently located right in the console.  Watching TV is a nice distraction when running in place, which ordinarily can be boring.

Speaker System with iPod/MP3 Player — In some of their higher end treadmills, like the Elite 9500 PRO, NordicTrack uses better than average speakers and includes a subwoofer.  This is one of the best sound systems found on a treadmill. Music is a great way to be motivated when running in place.

Adjustable Cushioning Deck — Although there is not a great difference or feel in the adjustment, you can change the feel from softer to firmer.  For those that like a solid push off, they can go with a firmer feel, while others can have a softer shock absorption.

iFit Card Technology — At an extra cost, you can purchase a series of workout routines designed by certified professional trainers.  In fact, there are several that are workouts from Jillian Michaels of Biggest Loser fame.  The workout cards control the speed and incline of your treadmill and include motivational audio coaching.  This has become a very popular feature for NordicTrack.

24 Installed Programs — There is a generous selection of installed programs that come with the Elite 9500 PRO.  Besides your standard programs, you have  4 distance programs to train for specific running events.  In addition, you have 4 heart rate control programs that define your workout based on a pre-targeted heart rate.  I believe the wireless chest strap is extra.

2.5" Rollers — Although these are not the biggest size rollers you will find in a treadmill, they are a good size.  The benefit of large rollers is they put less stress on the treadbelt, bearings and motor, and consequently extend their life.

Warranty — You get a lifetime warranty on the motor and 2-year parts and 1-year labor.  For the price this is not the most generous warranty, you may want to consider getting an extended upgrade, which is the idea behind the current coverage.

Our Review — NordicTrack Elite 9500 PRO

When priced aggressively, the NordicTrack Elite 9500 PRO is an impressive package.  You get some heavy duty components that are ideal for runners.  Meanwhile, you get an array of features that are designed to motivate and entertain you while you exercise in place.

Is this the best running treadmill built for residential use?  Not by a long shot, but it is a good running treadmill.  What makes this an attractive offer is the combination of all the above features at a value price.  Of course, NordicTrack changes prices weekly, so you have to catch it when it is on sale.  A good sale price would be 1,699 with shipping.
