A Wal-Mart Special

The Gold Gym treadmills are another Icon Fitness brand.  Others include ProForm, NordicTrack, Reebok, Epic, Weslo and Image.  Icon Fitness is the largest manufacturer of fitness equipment in the world, if not the universe. 

What Icon has done in the past is buy the rights to popular brand names and build fitness equipment using that name.  Thus you have NordicTrack and Reebok, and now Gold's Gym.  I assume the health club chain has nothing to do with the distribution of the Gold's Gym treadmills.

One of the reasons Icon Fitness has so many brands is because they target different markets, and give a degree of exclusivity with brand names to different retailers.  ProForm is sold through large sporting goods stores like Sports Authority. NordicTrack is sold primarily at Sears and you will find Gold's Gym treadmills at Wal-Mart.

So the Gold's Gym treadmills are relabeled models from Weslo, Image, ProForm and NordicTrack.  They vary in price from a few hundred dollars to over $1,000.  Some are dirt cheap and best avoid, while there are several that are a decent value. 

At my local Wal-Mart they offer three models.  On the Wal-Mart web site you get a better selection, and in fact, several of the Gold's Gym treadmills are only available on their web site. 

Are Gold's Gym Treadmills a good value?

You need to shop and compare, and it depends on what is on sale.  For example, on 2/19/09, Wal-Mart was selling the Gold's Gym Maxx Crosswalk 650 Treadmill for $649, and you can only get free shipping to your local Wal-Mart store.  Which means you have to go and pick it up. Otherwise there is an additional charge to get it shipped to your home.

In comparison, the ProForm 570 CrossWalk was on sale on their site for $599 with free shipping to your home.  They are pretty much the same machine. 

Another example is the Gold's Gym 1500 Treadmill.  The price is $1,549 with free shipping to the store.  For $1,499 you can get the comparable  NordicTrack Commercial 1600 with free shipping.  It also has a slightly larger motor.

I have not compared all the models, and there are probably several Gold's Gym treadmills that are a better deal than their comparable model.  The point is you want to check out ProForm, NordicTrack and Weslo for their comparable model.  You may save some money and not have to borrow someone's truck to go to the store and pick up the treadmill at Wal-Mart.
